Harem subgenres and Characters

•Harem genres:

*. Accidental Pervert
He isn’t a pervert. No, really! His hands just happened to slip and find themselves on her breasts.

*. Balanced Harem
Subtrope of the Harem Animegenre, a Romantic Comedywith one male protagonist, and a bunch of girls who are all in love with him, and equally close to him.

*. Battle Harem
A subtrope of the Harem Animegenre, where the male lead has a harem of potential love interests.

*. The Casanova
The sexual predator — a man who relentlessly pursues, lands, loves, and then is rejected by members of the harem but, still do like him.

*. Chick Magnet
A Chick Magnet is a guy who draws girls to him like bears to honey. He’s not The Casanova

*. Clueless Chick Magnet
for some “reason” they attract some romantic attention,

*. First Girl Wins
In romantic works, the first girl introduced — either overall or as a potential love interest— has a very good chance of ending up with protagonist.

*. Harem Seeker
Someone who actively seeks multiple love interests, the more the better, and usually makes no secret of it

*. Cohabitation
The main character lives platonically with someone of the opposite sexes, usually a members of the harem. Many also involves character just stay there, without actually doing anything (or anyone, mostly), or paying for anything.

*. Last Girl Wins
When First Girl Wins is not in effect, the most likely girl to win the heart of the male protagonist at the end of a harem animeis the last girl we meet in the series.

*. Loser Protagonist
the Loser Protagonist is not necessarily meant to be relatable, it’s just that they may be considered a loserby the standards of their society.

*. Love Dodecahedron
Love Trianglesare stressful and often heartbreaking. Add five or ten more people to the mix,

*. Magnetic Girlfriend
A common observation in fiction: Once you get a girlfriend, other girls just come naturally.
The lead male character may be nice, kind, and fairly attractive.

*. Marry Them All
In Love Triangles and more complicated situations, selecting just one suitor can prove to be a toughie. After all, the situation is there because he usually likes every girl to a degreeand doesn’t want to break anyone’s heart or make them leave his company

*. No Romantic Resolution
The story will generally be resolved one way or another with characters either hooking up, breaking apart, dying or just walking away from the situation entirely.

*. Not Blood Siblings
A common cop anime, manga and soap operas, when a series is based on Brother-Sister Incest, is to reveal towards the end, or explicitly state in the opening monologue, that they’re Not Blood Siblings.

*. Ordinary High-School Student
The most common protagonist of a show targeted at teenagers and has a school harem

*. Supporting Harem
Subtrope of the Harem Genre, a Romantic Comedywith one male protagonist, one female Love Interest, and a bunch of female side characters who also happen to be in love with the protagonist.

*. Themed Harem
Multiple harems in a harem show

*. Unlucky Everydude
Naturally, the lead has an inability to deal with women, for various reasons.

*. Unwanted Harem
This trope involves a common reaction from the man when a Harem plot begins and women start fighting for his attention but, he is clearly disinterested.

Common character types for the Harem members:

*. A-Cup Angst- Flat chest character

*. Aloof Dark-Haired Girl- strong personality and appearance

*. Bokukko-character will usually be addressed with the “-kun” honorific.

*. Butt Monkey- most of the times the male protagonist this, target of humour and female harem pain.

*. Cat Girl- human animal like female character

*. Clingy Jealous Girl- She’s often cute, sometimes aggressive and dorkly.

*. Cute Clumsy Girl-hot with a pinch of klutziness

*. Cute Ghost Girl-female member of the cast who just so happens to be a ghost after she met her demise.

*. Defrosting Ice Queen- often, an Emotionless Girl or Tsundere will be this.

*. The Ditherer- The lead is very often one of these. Emotionally undecided

*. Genki Girl- Japanese for “energetic” or “enthusiastic”. The Genki Girl is a character

*. Ill Girl-inevitably a sympathetically cute girl based an issue like a sickness

*. Kawaiiko- extremely cute character.

*. Loli granny
Face of a loli but, age of an Obi-chan

*. Magical Girlfriend-she’s often not exactlyhumanby most definitions — she is a Goddess, a Demon, or a Vampire, or a Witch, or an Extraterrestrial, or an Angel, or a Robot, or a Ghost, or a virtual being born of an advanced computer program, or under a spell/curse, or an immortal sorceress, or some combination of any or all of the above.

*. Manic Pixie Dream Girl
soulful, brooding male hero, living a sheltered, emotionless existence. If only someone could come along and open your heart to the great, wondrous adventure of life… Have no fear, theManic Pixie Dream Girlis here to give new meaning to the male hero’s life!

*. Meganekko
Literally, “glasses girl”—one of the classic “sweet girl” stereotypes in anime.

*. Meido
In anime, the housekeeper is a young, attractive woman

*. Moe
Coined in Japan in the late ’90s, “Moe” (萌え, pronounced as “Mo-Eh”, derived from a Japanese word that means ” budding, to sprout/bloom”) note is an ill-defined otaku term that means, amongst other things, “cute”, “huggable”, or “endearing”. Characters personality will reflect an “innocent” outlook.

*. Ojou
Literally, a formal Japanese word for “young lady”, the term Ojou (oftenOjou-sanorOjou-sama, as they are the more formal honorifics) is typically used in anime when referring to wealthy, high-class female characters.

*. Patient Childhood Love Interest
It is usually a girl, who grew up together with the main character, practically since infancy, and has been always in love with him, but instead of taking the initiative to become his girlfriend, she decided to take it slowly

*. Petite Pride
A girl who sees her lack of assets as a plus.

*. Psycho Lesbian- A rival to the guy with the Harem over one of the Haremettes. All lesbian characters on screen exclusively psychotic and villainous.

*. Puppy dog – character that just can’t help by follow the protagonist

*. Shrinking Violet-Painfully shy and quiet character

*. Tomboy- A girl with guy traits

*. Tsundere- A girl who switches between affection and hostility.A character with a Sugar and Ice Personality has two distinct sides, one cold and distant, the other warmer and open. In some cases the differences between the two aspects of the character’s personality are so radical as to be shocking coming from the same person.

*. Yamato Nadeshiko- The traditional Japanese ideal of femininity. It has appeals to different kinds of fans and can provide a contrast to a Tsundere.

*. Yandere- The inversion of the Tsundere with a killer instinct.

•Reverse Harem

A reverse harem includes three or more characters who potentially show romantic interest in a female protagonist. The sex, gender, or orientation of the harem members is irrelevant as long as they exclusively, or at least primarily, are vying for the affections of the same individual – who may or may not reciprocate towards one, several, or none of these romantic rivals.

•Harem ending??
Some visual novels offer a “harem ending” route, where the main character pursues a romantic relationship with multiple other characters simultaneously, with the consent of the other characters. In some cases, the harem ending is unavoidable.
