Goddamn Hentai Censorship

If you’ve ever seen a hentai OVA that wasn’t licensed for international release or that is made for a japanese audience in mind ,you most likely noticed that all the good parts were covered up by a mosaic censorship, digital “mozaiku” ( pixelation )….unlike your standard non BD gore or ecchi anime..with the swift “darkness” or sudden “beam of light”.

In 1907, Article 175 of the Criminal Code of Japan forbids the publication of obscene materials.
Which has be specifically adapted to in view of anime, manga to related material depictions of male-female sexual intercourse meaning all published work must have atleast partial gentalia censorship and this work should not show pubic hair.

The article states..
“Any person who distributes, sells or publicly displays an obscene writing, picture or other materials shall be punished with penal servitude for not more than two years or be fined not more than two million and a half yen or minor fine. The same shall apply to any person who possesses the same with the intention of selling it.”

1GANTZ-vol.01-16This law doesn’t make any differences between anime and other materials, so strictly speaking anime is treated no differently, The big question is “what defines ‘obscene'”, which the law doesn’t answer
The only other laws that are sometimes discussed in the context of censorship in Japan are child pornography laws. These ban distribution and creation of child pornography. They don’t currently apply to simulated or artistic depictions of children, so anime and manga is excluded..haha sleep easy lolicon, though this issue is still in debate but the way I see it..is that the damage has already been done.

So its not surprising that in 1986, Toshio Maeda sought to get past censorship on depictions of sexual intercourse, by creating tentacle sex. This led to the large number of works containing sexual intercourse with monsters, demons, robots, and aliens, whose genitals look different from men’s.

This is the result of a Japanese law making it illegal to show genitalia as previously stated, and thus pornographic material needs to be censored….which when you think about is kinda hypocritic if you ask me Japan…I think that was one of my first thoughts when I saw my first censored hentai ,I really questioned the censorship as a whole, bet you did too. The results of this and how it has been dealt with vary over time and medium, with OVA’s and manga dealing with and getting around this issue in various ways.

Both OVA’s and games tend to use the same censoring method, that is putting a mosaic on genitals to cover them up. This method has been used throughout the hentai’s history, although the 90’s tended to be a bit more creative with covering things up.

During the 90’s hentai tended to be more soft core, and instead of just slapping on a mosaic, genitals tended to be more covered up using whiter ink…(which to me is really bad but not as worse as mosaic..But, ya all censorship preferences aside..they still all suck) Tentacle porn was another way around this issue as also previously stated, since penises did need to be censored, but tentacles did not. This helped explain why tentacle porn was as prevalent as it was in the 90’s….big win for tentacle porn I guess??0005majikoi-v4-159

Another older outdated method was the legendary invisible penis, where instead of having a penis covered with a mosaic .If you’ve seen any older hentai you’ll most likely notice that for the most part, genitals don’t have much detail to them. As expected this is because the artists, knowing it would end up being censored, didn’t bother putting the effort into adding details to what would just be covered up. This would result in some really horrible looking penises and vagina, But this paradigm changed when hentai started getting licensed for release in other countries.

As hentai started becoming ready for release in other countries that did not have censoring laws, the general methods of censoring started to change. During this time much more effort was put into giving details to genitalia, since it now had to look good without having a mosaic distorting the image.

Hentai also got a lot more hardcore, with more things being show out in the open, and fewer creative angle covering things up. With the death of America hentai market, uncensored hentai became a thing of the past. Currently uncensored hentai can’t be obtained, since hentai really isn’t seeing any international releases. But modern hentai tends to have very tight mosaics that only just cover things up…which are fair but in truth you get more of your money’s worth by sticking to hentai manga rather than hentai anime.

Games tend to have the same censoring methodology as OVA’s, Manga tends to use a different method of censoring than OVA’s, although mosaics are sometimes used. Older comics tended to go for methods similar to OVA’s of the 90’s, with either fully whited/blacked out penises/vaginas…which in my book doesn’t take away more of the ero essence or just not drawing them at all which is common in ecchi anime, manga or any to the two that is said to be borderline hentai.

Modern comics for the most part use censor bars, that are hilariously undersized, and do little to nothing to cover up what’s going on. They exist less to truly censor the action, and more just as a legal requirement. These censor bars are present in both published books and in doujinshi, which are still regulated and required to be censored by law….(Japan logic lol) . For the most part censoring in manga has no effect at all, and often can’t even be noticed…just how a perv like me likes it..

Do I see a future in the removal of anime, manga censorship in Japan…who knows,ya its all about culture, morals and many mangaka are advocating more freedom in view of drawing raw hentai which to me isn’t a bad thing. Maybe Japan is in some serious denial. Point being is that its not a far fetched idea that these laws may change, may vanish…”Poof”..times change..till than why not relax and enjoy a good helping of partial reasonably censored hentai manga or some good redrawn hentai….cheers to that.
